Overview
After School Sports are extracurricular athletic activities that constitute an integral part of our students’ education. Students learn important life skills such as communication, competitiveness, problem solving, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
Any student may tryout for a team or join the following Non-Cut Sports which are Cross Country, Wrestling, and Track & Field. Please understand that each student must have the proper documents completed. This information can be found under our Tryout, Enrollment, and Donation Process Tab.
To find out more information about our league, the schools we compete against, and much more information please visit the Valley Athletic League website by clicking HERE or going to www.valleyal.org.

Practice / Game Schedules and Information:
Practice and Games:
Our middle school student-athletes typically are only committed to 4 Days each Week (Mon - Thur) for practices and games. Practices are Monday through Thursday (Up to 2 Hours Between 3:15 - 6:30 PM). Contests/Games are Monday through Thursday (Start Times 4:00/5:05 PM). There are no practices or games on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. Please note that coaches may practice on a Friday if another day during the week has been missed.
All Dates & Times are Subject to Change due to various reasons. Make sure You or your Student-Athlete communicate with the coach or check the Game Schedule (valleyal.org).
Practice Policy:
With the very short time with which our Athletes have to prepare for competitions, we ask that parents, siblings, and friends not attend our teams practices. Students need to stay focused and away from distractions for the duration of their practice time.If you happen to arrive 10-15 minutes early to transport your athlete, please respect the practice and keep your distance until the coach has completed their wrap-up with their players.
We thank you in advance for adhering to these guidelines.
Competition and Playing Time:
While ALL teams and players want to WIN, it is not the most important goal during the season. Developing skills, team cohesion, self-discipline & having fun are Key Attributes for Athletes. Coaches will do their best to have all athletes participate in each contest, but playing time is up to the discretion of each coach and may not be Equal.
Coaches have been hired as “Experts” based on their Experience. Please respect their decisions and how they Manage their Roster. “Playing Time” will not be discussed with parents. Players are encouraged to inquire with their coach on what they can do to earn time.
Tryout, Enrollment, and Donation Process
Overview:
There are several very important steps that must be taken prior to having your athlete participate in any athletics team. Firstly, students will need to fill out a grade check form with the help of their teachers (Season 1 does not require a grade check form). Then depending on their desired sport they will need to either enroll or complete the tryout waiver form. If the sport is a non-cut sport then the next step is to enroll / register for that sport. This is for Cross Country, Wrestling, and Track and Field. If the sport does have cuts then a tryout form is required. Then if your athlete has made it through all of the cuts then they must be enrolled prior to the start of competition. For more information and helpful links and videos please refer to the subtopics below.
Tryouts:
This information is only necessary if the sport has cuts. These sports are Basketball, Softball, Volleyball, and Soccer. Be sure that prior to the first day of tryouts, students and parents must complete the tryout waiver form on the Valley Athletic Leagues website or by clicking HERE. This MUST be completed before your student tries out for a team.
Grade Check Forms:
Here at CMS we want to foster an environment of excellence which is why we ask our student-athletes to complete a grade check form. We want to ensure that the student component comes before athletics. Therefore, students must take a grade check form to each of their teachers for completion. Once completed students can turn them in at the office. There will be extra copies kept in the office or students can print a copy HERE.
Poor grades or unsatisfactory reports of their citizenship behavior in class may impact participation in CMS athletics.
Enrollment:
Once a student has been selected for a team which means they made it through cuts or if the sport is a non-cut sport then they need to enroll. Please do not enroll your student before they have made the team.
In order to enroll, you will need to create a Team Sideline account. You will be prompted to create this account when click the enroll button on the Valley Athletic League website or by clicking HERE.Once your account has been created then you will need to add your child to your account. This can be done by clicking on the members tab and then the add child tab. Once your child is added to your account then you can enroll them by clicking the Enroll tab and selecting the sports team in which they have made.
Here is a presentation that can assist with the tryout form and enrollment process.

Donations:
In order to sustain the After School Sports Program, we ask that each Student-Athlete’s family make a $125 donation each season the student participates in a sport.
Although students may participate regardless of whether a donation is made, it is important to understand that we may need to cancel or reduce the Sports we offer in the event we are unable to raise sufficient yearly funds.
Donations Cover: Coaches, Officials, Equipment, Uniforms, Etc.
Please click on the link to be directed to our district donation page. Click HERE.
Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated.

Transportation
Uniforms and Equipment
Each sports season, uniforms & equipment are used and loaned out to players for practice & games. Many of these are damaged or never returned. Please do your part to help keep our expenses down.
It is imperative that ALL of these CMS items are returned promptly upon the season has been completed. Please do not wear your uniform at school. These should only be worn for game play. This increases the longevity of our uniforms.
Make sure to always wash in cold water and hang to dry!
Return your CMS items to your coach in the same condition as you received them.
Thank you.
Sportsmanship
As visitors on each campus, parents, family & guests are expected to adhere to sportsmanship guidelines before, during & following ALL youth competitions.
Spectators should positively cheer and support athletes from both teams. Please be respectful to officials, coaches, players, and other spectators.
Unacceptable Behaviors that may lead to removal from a venue and possibly dismissal from a team are:
-
Verbal aggression towards officials, coaches, players or other spectators
-
Obscene language
-
Physical violence or threats
Host school’s administrators may ask you to vacate the premises if any of these occur.
Parent Volunteers
We love having parent volunteers on campus. If you are interested in volunteering at CMS, click HERE to get cleared by the district. This will also clear you to volunteer for a lot of other campus activities throughout the year.
Communication and Contact Information
We are advocates of open lines of communication here at CMS and we strive to make that a reality. If you have any questions regarding after school sports, you can reach out to our school athletic director but please try to follow the process outlined below.
STEP 1) Athlete Talks with their Coach
STEP 2) Parent Talks with the Coach
STEP 3) Parent and/or Coach Talks to the Athletic Director (AD - Jonathan McMahan)
STEP 4) AD Talks with the school Administrators (Principals and Assistant Principals).
Parents: please do not discuss playing time with Coaches following Contests or Games. A 24 Hour “Cooling-Off Period” should be observed prior to any contact. Most Issues Can/Should be Handled/Addressed by Athletes and their Coach.
